Eight centuries on a Tuscan hill
From a medieval watchtower to a painter's villa beloved by poets — a few of the stories Striano has gathered over the centuries.
13th century · A watchtower
Striano begins as a guarding tower of the powerful Ubaldini family, keeping watch over the Mugello valley north of Florence.
18th century · Villa & the naturalist
The Franceschi family transforms the stronghold into a villa. It also belonged to Antonio Cocchi — physician, writer, and curator of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany's museums.
1872 · A painter's home
Michele Gordigiani — celebrated portraitist of the queens of Europe — buys Striano and reimagines it with architect Del Moro, who designed the sun-filled Limonaia under the Renaissance influence of Buontalenti.
Belle Époque · Music & muses
Gordigiani's daughter Giulietta — a singer and pianist — marries Baron Robert von Mendelssohn, of the composer's family. The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio and the great actress Eleonora Duse spend long summer days at the villa as her close friends.
Today · A historic residence
Now a recognized Historic Residence (ADSI), Striano opens its halls, gardens, and Tuscan views to host celebrations — including ours.
